Speak Up for DLD Awareness Day -- Friday 18th October 2024

DLD Awareness Day is coming up and we are trying to shine a spotlight on a condition that affects 1 in 14 people worldwide (that's 2 in every classroom!!!): Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

Organised by the incredible people at RADLD, this day is all about raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and reminding everyone affected by DLD that they are not alone. It’s a chance to embrace the journey, build understanding, and recognise the strength and resilience of those navigating life with DLD.

What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a lifelong condition that impacts the ability to understand and use language. For children and adults with DLD, communicating their thoughts, feelings, and ideas can be challenging. This can make school, work, and social situations more difficult—but it’s important to know that with the right support, people with DLD can and do thrive.

DLD is often described as a “hidden disability” because there are no visible signs, making it harder for others to recognise and understand. Many parents feel lost and overwhelmed when they first hear the diagnosis, but the reality is that a world of support is out there. You, as a parent or carer, are an essential part of that support network, and together, we can make a huge difference.

You Are Not Alone: Building a Strong Support Network

If you are a parent, caregiver, or someone with DLD, today is about YOU. It’s about celebrating your perseverance, highlighting your strengths, and recognising the powerful impact you have by being present, engaged, and open to learning more. Whether you’re just starting out on this journey or you’ve been navigating DLD for a while, you are doing an amazing job!

The support that makes the biggest difference doesn’t always come from experts or professionals; it comes from people like YOU. You are your child’s most important advocate and cheerleader. Participating in raising awareness on DLD Awareness Day is a powerful step that lets others know: it’s okay to ask questions, it’s okay to need help, and it’s okay to keep going, even when things feel tough.

It’s Okay—Help is Available

Understanding and supporting DLD doesn’t require a degree in speech and language

therapy. What matters most is empathy, patience, and being willing to listen. Celebrate each small victory—whether it’s a new word, a shared story, or a moment of connection—because those moments matter. Seeking support isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength.

Resources, speech and language therapy, and communities like RADLD are here to help guide you, offering tools and strategies that build communication skills step by step.

And for clients with DLD: don’t ever underestimate your own potential. You are capable of achieving amazing things. Yes, communicating might take a little more effort, but every word you share, every thought you express, and every time you stand up for yourself, you’re making a difference.

Let’s Be “That Person” Together

Today, let’s commit to being “that person” who makes a positive impact. Share your story, educate a friend, or reach out to support someone. If you’re a parent or carer, connect with other families who are navigating similar paths. There’s so much power in building connections and knowing that you’re not alone. When we come together, we build a world where DLD is understood, accepted, and supported.

To everyone living with DLD and to all the families, therapists, and educators out there—thank you. Thank you for your strength, your advocacy, and your unwavering dedication. Let’s keep the conversation going, not just on DLD Awareness Day, but every day.

Spread the Word and Show Your Support

Join us and RADLD in spreading awareness by sharing resources, using the hashtags #DLDYouAndMe and #DLDday on social media, and wearing the campaign colours purple and yellow proudly. Every little action counts, and together, we’re building a brighter future for everyone affected by DLD.

Remember: Developmental Language Disorder doesn’t define you. You are more than the challenges you face, and with understanding, support, and love, anything is possible.

Happy DLD Awareness Day - today, we celebrate YOU!
